Kecksies and Other Twilight Tales
Kecksies and Other Twilight Tales
Who in the world is Marjorie Bowen? Ah, well, thought I, the title of the book is Kecksies and Other Twilight Tales, I'll take a chance on this. After reading the first few pages, I knew I was in the hands of a masterful writer. Bowen's English is precise, never flowery; direct and never inconsequential. My personal favorite of all these stories is The Crown Derby Plate, about a woman who is missing a certain plate from her otherwise perfect set of china, and there's this certain woman living in a very lonely house up on the forbidding heath...
These are stories to be savored; to be read at night, in a comfortable chair. They are easily on par with the best of Algernon Blackwood and Le Fanu. Indeed, I'd rather read these stories again and again to absorb more of her writing style, which one simply does not see any more. Reading this book may make you long for a time when literacy was the joy of one's life, and no form of entertainment could rival a good book.
